About Argos

Argos began in 1972 when Richard Tompkins had the idea for a new type of retailer that allowed customers to shop from catalogues for immediate pick-up.

The first store opened in Greenford, Middlesex stocking just 12,000 lines. But the concept quickly took off.

Argos expanded rapidly over the next decades, bringing convenient catalogue shopping to high streets across the UK. It also became a familiar name in Ireland following its acquisition of Elverys in the 1990s.

In 2016, Argos was bought by supermarket giant Sainsbury's for £1.4 billion. This has enabled further growth through Argos concessions opening inside Sainsbury's supermarkets.

Today Argos remains one of the most recognised retail brands in Britain. It's reinvented itself as both a catalogue and digital retailer with over 30,000 products now available online.
