About Shoe Zone
Originally named as Stylo Matchmakers, Shoe Zone was founded in 1980 by brothers Norman, Harvey and Victor Cohen. They opened the very first store in Dr Martens' hometown of Wollaston, Northamptonshire. By buying factory seconds and surplus stock, Norman Cohen was able to retail quality leather shoes at bargain prices by cutting out the middleman costs. This discount outlet model proved hugely successful, leading to expansion with 18 stores trading under the name Northern Shoes by 1985.
The Shoe Zone fascia first emerged in the 1990s, as the business grew rapidly to acquire other footwear chains including Outlet, Choice Shoes and Stead & Simpson. Large out-of-town outlets with dedicated parking cemented Shoe Zone as a shopping destination for price-conscious families. At its peak in the early 2000s, there were over 500 UK stores and a thriving wholesale division exporting British shoes worldwide.
By sticking to its founding principles of selling top quality shoes at the lowest feasible prices, Shoe Zone retains its appeal across generations. With expertise in understanding and catering to its core customer base, Britain's best-loved shoe shop chain looks set to thrive on the high street for years to come.
